Entries discuss Smith's work and travels locally in southern Georgia, South Carolina, and elsewhere, including Florida; transcriptions of entries, Jan. 1895-June 1895 (pp. 231-240) and Aug. 1904-Aug. 1908 (pp. 198-230).
Description
Travel accounts commence during Aug. 1901, when Smith left Valdosta, Georgia, for employment in Florida, apparently as a migrant farm worker; entries from this period note work with eggplants, strawberries, pineapples, celery, etc., names of fellow boarders at the rooming houses where he resided, freqent interuptions of work due to rain, visits to local Baptist churches, and entry, Sunday, 29 Sept. 1901, "walk over town with Mr. Frank Risker and visit Bar Room (Lord forgive me for it)"; earlier time periods discussed include a trip to visit W. Jasper Hanna during week of 14-17 Oct. 1897 (p. 64).
Description
Genealogical information includes lists of deaths and marriages mentioned in journal entries (pp. 178-197), as wellas listed chronologically, by wife's name, and by husband's name (241-252); family names represented include Lee, Lynch, Matthews, Smith, Springs, and others.
